Summary: This Hardy Boys mystery begins when the boys’ father is set out working on a covert mission to protect a radar station just outside of their hometown of Bayport. Joe and Frank, the infamous Hardy Boys, are told by a certain Mary Todd that her brother, the professor, has gone missing. Combining forces with their father Fenton, the Hardy Boys set out to find the missing Mr. Todd. While in their search to find the missing professor, the boys meet one of his colleagues: a Mr. Cadmus Quill. This suspicious character seems nervous when the boys mention going to rockaway and on an examination paper they find a mysterious message. The variety of clues leads the boys to Honeycomb Caves where a strange old hermit greets them quite gruffly. The hermit attempts to chase the boys out of the caves for good, but the boys have realized that they are on to something.
The mystery intensifies as the boys explore the depths of the caves to find a secret plot to disrupt the workings of the radar station. As is expected for a Hardy Boys novel, the boys get to the bottom of the plot and find the whereabouts of the missing professor.
