Summary: The story follows a young girl named Susan Price who heads to the town of Highland Crossing, New York, to spend to summer with her aunt. In this small town, Susan’s aunt runs an antique store and is in the process of obtaining a large house for the Price family from Captain Teague. While spending her time amidst the clutter of the antique shop and intermingling with the townspeople, Susan meets a cast of intriguing characters. One of these people, an odd old woman named Miss Altoona, takes an interest in Susan and her family.

Captain Teague finally allows the family to move into his home and Susan discovers Miss Altoona spying on the house from the bushes. Upon their arrival in the home, Susan and her family begin to experience of bevy of strange happenings. The most notable, and the most disturbing is what appears to be a face looking up at Susan through the water. Many twists and turns follow as Susan attempts to unlock the mystery of the haunted pool.
